Sir Barclay For the Love of Dogs ! A funny thing happened to me on the way to work on October 10, 2007. For some reason I decided to stop and see a local dog breeder, who breeds the finest Old English Sheep Dogs in the country. He was helping me with a charity I am involved in. It was a beautiful fall day and he happened to be out sweeping the walk. Right next to the walk was an outdoor pen and of course it had three Old English Sheep dog puppies. I just lost one of my best friends in July, Melanie our Bearded Collie. We had Melanie for thirteen years and she was one of the most beautiful, faithful companions you could have. It was a very sad day in our life, one we will never forget. Anyways, we were talking and the three puppies came up. I was asking about them, not intending to get another dog for awhile. He indicated that he was going to keep two of the puppies, as they were show quality and the third little guy would have to be put to sleep the end of the week. Obviously, I was surprised and asked why, as he was playing and looked fine. Well it seems he was born totally deaf and he would not be able to sell him or keep him. This was sad as he was beautiful. Well, this day also happened to be my wife's birthday. So, I started thinking. What a birthday gift !. So the breeder and I discussed it and he decided to relinquish the pup (the deaf little boy) if I would give him a good home. I promised, and picked him up that afternoon. I took him home, he walked into the house and the rest is history.
Sir Barclay, although a challenge at first is a great member of the family. He is going to training and is learning hand signals. He is a very smart dog and the instructor is so impressed, he thinks that he would be a great candidate for K-9 Companion training, which he will start soon.
Sir Barclay is now 10 months old. If I hadn't stopped that day, which I almost didn't, Sir Barclay would probably not be here today. I still wonder what made me turn the corner !
